What are read receipts (tracking)?

Read receipts let you see when an email you’ve sent has been opened. The feature relies on a small, invisible tracking pixel that loads when the recipient opens the email.

How it works

When you send an email with tracking on, a small invisible image is embedded in the message. When the recipient opens the email, the image is loaded — and this is registered as an open. The email is then marked as opened in your interface.

What it shows

  • That the email has most likely been opened.
  • An approximate time of the open.

What it does NOT show

  • Not who read the email if it was forwarded.
  • Not whether the recipient actually read the content — only that the email was opened.
  • Not how long the email was open.
Read receipts are an indication, not proof. If the recipient has images turned off, reads in a preview without loading images, or uses a privacy proxy, no open is registered even if the email was read. Never blindly rely on a missing receipt.
